Why Trust Us About National Parks in May
You should probably know that we didn’t just make this list up out of thin air. We’ve spent our entire adult lives exploring and filming America’s national parks and public lands.
We’ve worked with the National Park Service, the Department of Interior, USDA, and the U.S. Forest Service for years creating films on important places and issues.
Our work has been featured in leading publications all over the world and even some people outside of our immediate family call us experts on the national parks.

The Parks Brothers
We’re Jim Pattiz and Will Pattiz, collectively known as the Pattiz Brothers (and sometimes the Parks Brothers) and we absolutely LOVE the national parks.
Our goal here at More Than Just Parks is to share the beauty of America’s national parks and public lands through stunning short films in an effort to get Americans and the world to see the true value in land conservation.

About Grand Canyon National Park in May
In the words of Theodor Roosevelt:
“In the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a natural wonder which is in kind absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world. I want to ask you to keep this great wonder of nature as it now is.
I hope you will not have a building of any kind, not a summer cottage, a hotel or anything else, to mar the wonderful grandeur, the sublimity, the great loneliness and beauty of the canyon.
Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it.“
May is an excellent time to visit the Grand Canyon as crowd sizes are not yet their insane summer peaks, and temperatures are getting into the hot zone but still somewhat tolerable.

2 National Parks to Avoid in May
Crater Lake National Park
In May Crater Lake is *just* starting to melt and in between the beautiful winter and summer seasons. The main park road is still closed as are the campgrounds and the main lodge until the end of the month. For these reasons we recommend holding off visiting until at least June.

Mount Rainier National Park
Mount Rainier is one of the most beautiful national parks in the world but May is just not the best time to visit. Most of the trails are still snowed in and several roads are still closed. Wildflowers don’t start showing up until the July. Snow is just starting to melt at lower elevations making traversing the park difficult. We recommend holding off until June at the earliest.

Thank you for a very well written article!
My husband & I had visited, camped and hiked in trails at most of these National Parks from midSeptember (when the crowd has thinned out) through end of October, one or two States at a time, from 1990-2001. This is a beautiful country and it’s National Park Service people, from rangers to volunteers, are doing a marvelous job by keeping our National Parks the best in the world! ❤️THANK YOU ALL !!!❤️
[Note: Of course, we had to make sure we’ve kept our body prepared for these events by exercising well with weights and all to be able to hike well & enjoy our vacation! Plus, we also packed our food (dry ones) &shopped for those food needing to be cooked at the campground!
In those years, we didn’t get sick nor get in any accident! Thanks be to God! Don’t forget to visit the museums in each State’s capital city, most especially in New York and Washington D. C.
By the way, we did not join any tour group but went on our own with each State’s packet with maps of places to visit. It took me a year to study and prepare the visits in all States!]
Do you know of a map that has US Forest Service campgrounds shown on it. I had one and it got away from me and now in a world where maps are not as popular as they used to be, I can’t find one.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure the USGS prints all the Forest Service maps. Are you looking for one in particular? Most of the ones we get come with all the campgrounds etc. They’re great!
