The situation
The calving ground for the Teshekpuk caribou herd and a staging area for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds from six continents. Protections that kept drilling at bay have been rolled back, and the largest NPR-A lease sale in history just handed 1.33 million acres to eleven oil companies for $164.7 million. Habitat that took 10,000 years to form on thawing permafrost is now slated for industrial development.
