The origin
The Brooks Range Council formed in the summer of 2012, when state survey crews started working the route of the road to Ambler. Its members hold multi-generational ties to remote places along the Ambler, Kobuk and Koyukuk rivers, with allies in village governments and the guiding community, and they agree the road would do far more harm than good.
How they run
We don’t hold a detailed federal filing for this group. Groups this size often file the short form or run below the IRS reporting line, so there’s no budget or crew to show here, and that’s no knock: some of the sharpest local defense in the country runs this way.
