The situation
What’s happening to Twin Mountain II Timber Sale
One of the largest old-growth timber sales in Southeast Alaska in years, on Prince of Wales Island in the Tongass National Forest. The Forest Service combined two earlier sales into the Twin Mountain II project and released a draft environmental impact statement for 1,655 acres of old-growth clearcut and 26.8 million board feet near Red Bay and the Staney watershed. These are centuries-old trees in the largest remaining temperate rainforest in the country. The units sit outside inventoried roadless areas, on the roaded ground between them.
