Sattitla is the original name of this area, derived from the Pit River (Achumawi-Asugewi) language. The monument encompasses the traditional homelands of the Pit River and Modoc peoples. Old-growth forests, wild rivers, and cultural sites that have sustained these communities in northern California for millennia. A monument born into a hostile political moment, facing executive reversal before its first anniversary.
