The situation
The BLM is preparing to auction oil and gas leases on more than 54,000 acres of public land surrounding Dinosaur National Monument in its Q2 2026 Utah lease sale. The parcels sit in the Uinta Basin, where decades of drilling have already produced air quality comparable to Los Angeles on bad days. Conservation groups have challenged prior lease sales near the monument, and a coalition is now urging BLM to halt the latest round. The monument itself, a landscape of deep river canyons and some of the richest fossil beds in North America, would be flanked by industrial development on multiple sides.
