“To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth.”
The origin
Founded by John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is the oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization in the country, with chapters in every state and hundreds of thousands of members. It works the full toolkit at once: organizing volunteers, lobbying Congress, and taking federal agencies to court. On public lands its fights run from defending national monuments and the Roadless Rule to challenging oil and gas leasing across the West.
Every year they sign one sentence and file it with the federal government: “TO EXPLORE, ENJOY, AND PROTECT THE WILD PLACES OF THE EARTH; PRACTICE AND PROMOTE RESPONSIBLE USE OF THE EARTH'S ECOSYSTEMS AND RESOURCES; EDUCATE AND ENLIST HUMANITY TO PROTECT AND RESTORE THE QUALITY OF THE NATURAL AND HUMAN ENVIRONMENT; AND USE ALL LAWFUL MEANS TO CARRY OUT THESE OBJECTIVES.”

That ratio is a good sign, not a scorecard. Plenty of great groups run leaner and lumpier. What matters is the extremes, and Sierra Club is nowhere near one.
