Every summer we hear from folks asking the same worried question. We’ve had this trip planned for a year, and now there’s a fire. Do we cancel?

Most of the time, the answer is no. Fire season is part of summer in the American West now, the way afternoon thunderstorms are part of summer in the Rockies. It’s not a reason to stop visiting the parks we love. It is a reason to plan differently, check a few key tools before you go, and build a little flexibility into the itinerary.

We’ve spent years filming in these parks through smoky Augusts and clear Septembers, and we built two free tools, a live national park wildfire tracker and a public lands air quality map, precisely because this question kept coming up. This guide is the full playbook for using them, and everything else, to plan a fire-season trip with confidence.


How Fire Season Actually Works

Fire season isn’t one season. It moves around the map, and knowing the rhythm helps you pick dates wisely in the first place.

The mechanics are simple enough. Winter snowpack melts, grasses and forests dry out through the heat of summer, and by late July the Mountain West is primed. Then lightning (which starts the majority of large western fires) or human carelessness supplies the spark. Activity typically peaks in August, when conditions are hottest and driest, and breaks when the first fall rain and snow arrive in September or October.

Here’s the planning takeaway. If your dates are flexible and your destination is Glacier, Yellowstone, or the Sierra parks, June and early July carry meaningfully less smoke risk than August. Mid September onward, the odds swing back in your favor. August trips are still wonderful more often than not, but August is the month where the rest of this guide earns its keep.

What This Summer Looks Like (Updated June 2026)

That’s the average year. Here’s the one we’re actually in. The National Interagency Fire Center publishes a monthly significant fire potential outlook, which is the single best forward look at fire season anywhere, and the June 1, 2026 edition is blunt. Winter snowpack across Oregon, Washington, and parts of the northern Rockies came in well below normal and melted out early, with most mid-elevation basins in the Northwest reporting little or no snow left by late May, exposing high country fuels weeks ahead of schedule.

The forecast that follows from that runs above normal across much of the West. For June, NIFC calls for above normal fire potential across the inland Northwest, the central Great Basin, the Four Corners region, and northern California. Through July it spreads into southwest Montana, the Idaho Panhandle, and southwest Oregon and northwest Washington. By August the outlook puts the entire Northwest geographic area at above normal potential, with no sign of relief through September. And the country came into summer running hot, with about 2.4 million acres burned by the end of May, nearly double the 10-year average pace.

None of that cancels a trip on its own. It means the check-in schedule below isn’t optional this year, especially for Glacier, North Cascades, Crater Lake, and the Sierra parks. We update this section each season, so the date in the heading tells you how fresh it is.

Smoke and Flames Are Different Problems

This is the single most useful distinction in fire-season planning, so we’ll spend a minute on it.

Flames are a local problem. An active fire closes specific roads, trails, and districts, and park staff are very good at drawing those lines. Even in a big fire year, the actual closure footprint is usually a small slice of a park. The 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim was devastating where it burned, yet the South Rim, where more than 90 percent of folks visit, stayed open the whole time.

Smoke is a regional problem, and it’s the one far more likely to affect your trip. Smoke travels hundreds of miles, which means a fire in British Columbia can gray out the skies over Glacier while the park itself has nothing burning. Smoke is also fickle. It rides the wind, so a valley can be socked in at breakfast and clear by dinner, and the next drainage over can be fine all day.

So when you see a headline about fires near your destination park, the two questions to ask are, is anything actually closed, and what is the air like. Those are answered by different tools, and that brings us to the bookmark list.

The Six Tools to Bookmark

1. Our National Park Wildfire Tracker

Start here. Our live wildfire tracker maps active fires against national parks and public lands specifically, so you can see at a glance whether a fire actually threatens the places on your itinerary, how close it really is, and what the situation means for a visit. We built it because general fire maps make every blaze look like an emergency, and the question folks actually have is simpler. Can I still go, and what will it be like. The tracker is park-centric and updates continuously through the season. Bookmark it the day you book the trip, then check it weekly as your dates approach.

2. Our Public Lands Air Quality Map

The companion tool. Our air quality map shows live air quality readings across more than 2,600 national parks, forests, and public land units, which answers the smoke question directly. Flames 100 miles away with clean air at your park is a green light. No flames anywhere near you but an AQI of 180 drifting in from another state is a different conversation, and we’ll get to what those numbers mean in a moment.

3. The Park’s Own Alerts Page

Every park posts current conditions and closures on its nps.gov site, and this is the authoritative word on what’s open. From any park’s homepage, look for Alerts and Current Conditions. This is where you’ll find the actual closure orders, fire restrictions (campfire bans are common by late summer), and reopening updates.

4. AirNow Fire and Smoke Map

The EPA and Forest Service run fire.airnow.gov, which combines official monitors, low-cost sensors, and smoke plume forecasts. It’s the standard reference for AQI numbers and the source for most of the air quality data you’ll see anywhere, including forecasts for tomorrow’s smoke.

5. InciWeb

For the deep dive on a specific fire, InciWeb is the federal incident information system. Each large fire gets a page with size, containment percentage, evacuation info, and daily updates written by the incident team. If a named fire is anywhere near your route, this is where you read its biography.

6. Park Webcams and Satellite Imagery

The visual ground truth. Most major parks run live webcams on their nps.gov sites, and a 10-second look answers the question no map can. Is the view at Old Faithful actually gray right now, or did the forecast miss? We check the cams every morning of a smoky-season trip before deciding where to point the car.

For the wide view, NASA Worldview shows near-real-time satellite imagery with the FIRMS fire detection layer, which means you can watch a smoke plume and see which way it’s actually heading instead of guessing. Our own air quality map pulls the same FIRMS fire detections, so the satellite layer is already baked in if you’d rather check one place.

Reading the Air Quality Numbers

The Air Quality Index runs from 0 to 500, and the categories matter more than the exact number. Here’s how we’d translate them for a park trip, keeping in mind that hiking hard multiplies how much smoke you’re actually breathing.

Categories from the EPA Air Quality Index. Exertion increases your effective exposure, so a hard hike at AQI 140 can feel like sitting still at a much worse number.

Two practical notes. Smoke is usually worst in valley bottoms overnight and in the morning, because cool air settles, and it often lifts or thins by afternoon. And an N95 mask, which packs down to nothing, makes a smoky travel day far more comfortable. We toss a couple in the glovebox every July.

And one camera note, from a lot of smoky shoots. Moderate smoke washes out the long views and flattens the big panoramas, but it also serves up deep red sunsets and soft, diffused light. On hazy days we shoot close subjects and forests at midday and save the wide shots for the last hour of light, when the smoke starts working for you instead of against you.

The Check-In Schedule We Recommend

  1. When you book: bookmark the wildfire tracker, the air quality map, and your park’s NPS alerts page. Note the cancellation deadlines on every reservation (more on this below).
  2. Two weeks out: check the tracker for named fires near your route. If something is burning, read its InciWeb page and check whether the park has closed anything. Most of the time the answer is no.
  3. Three to four days out: this is the smoke forecast window, and usually your last free cancellation window for camping. Check AQI trends and the smoke outlook, then make your keep-or-adjust call.
  4. Each morning of the trip: a 60-second glance at the air quality map, the park webcams, and the park alerts page, then build the day around what you see. Smoky morning in the valley, drive to the high overlook. Clear window forecast for tomorrow, save the big hike for it.

And to answer the question folks actually type into the search bar, how far ahead can you know whether your trip will be smoky? About three to five days, and no further. Beyond that window, the honest answer is seasonal odds, not forecasts, which is exactly why the schedule above leans so hard on the final week.

When to Reroute and When to Cancel

Our honest framework, having watched a lot of fire seasons come and go.

Keep the trip as planned when fires are distant, nothing on your itinerary is closed, and AQI is sitting in the green and yellow. This describes the large majority of fire-season trips, even in busy years.

Adjust the trip when a specific area is closed or smoky but the region is fine. If one valley is closed, the rest of the park is usually open and quieter than usual. This is also where a two-park itinerary shines. Smoke over Sequoia often means decent air at the coast. No pairing is guaranteed, so check both on the air quality map before committing. The principle is distance plus a mountain range or a prevailing wind between you and the fires.

Reroute when AQI is forecast to sit above 150 for most of your stay, or when the marquee experiences of your trip (the road, the hike, the lodge) are closed. There’s no prize for hiking in air you can taste. Head north, head coastal, or head to higher elevation, and remember that the Midwest and East are usually running a completely different weather story in August.

Cancel outright only when evacuations touch your route, the park is broadly closed, or air is forecast in the very unhealthy range with no realistic alternative. It happens, but far less often than the headlines suggest.

Booking for Flexibility, and the Refund Fine Print

The cheapest insurance is knowing the cancellation rules before you book, because they decide how late you can make the call.

Recreation.gov campsites. Cancel ahead of time and you get a refund minus a $10 service fee. Cancel the day before or the day of arrival and you also forfeit the first night. No-shows pay a $20 fee plus the first night. One-night reservations cancelled late are simply gone. The practical rule is to make your camping decision at least two days out. The big exception works in your favor, though, and it’s written policy, not just custom. Recreation.gov’s published rule states that in the event of an emergency closure, the Recreation.gov team or facility manager will refund all fees. So a true fire closure isn’t the scenario that costs you money. Smoke without a closure is, because smoky skies are not a refundable event.

Park lodges. Policies vary by concessioner, so read yours, but Yellowstone’s are typical of the breed. Yellowstone National Park Lodges (Xanterra) lets you cancel free more than 30 days out, charges a $25 fee for changes or cancellations inside 30 days, and keeps the full deposit if you cancel within 7 days of a summer arrival. Glacier’s and other parks’ operators run similar tiers. The pattern to internalize is that lodge decisions need to happen a month out, long before anyone knows where the smoke will be, which is exactly why we favor the adjust-and-reroute mindset over cancellation.

The flexible-itinerary playbook. Book refundable lodging outside the park for at least part of the trip. Keep one or two unplanned days in the middle of any August itinerary. Have a named plan B park in a different airshed, ideally 200 miles or more away or across a mountain range. And if you’re spending serious money on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, travel insurance with cancel-for-any-reason coverage is the only product that reliably covers smoke, since standard policies generally don’t. Two details make CFAR work or not work for you. It typically has to be added within about 14 to 21 days of your first trip payment, so decide early, and it reimburses 50 to 75 percent of your nonrefundable costs rather than all of them, with cancellation usually required at least two days before departure.

A Word About Fire Itself

We’d be doing these places a disservice if we left it at logistics. Fire built the landscapes we travel to see. Lodgepole pines seal their seeds in resin and wait for heat to open them. Sequoias need fire to clear the duff their seedlings sprout in. Yellowstone’s 1988 fires burned more than a third of the park, led the evening news for weeks, and the park that grew back is the one folks fall in love with today.

So if your trip does brush up against fire season, take the chance to read the burn scars you drive past. A hillside of silver snags above a carpet of young green trees is not a ruin. It’s the forest doing what it has always done, and watching these places carry on that work is its own reason to keep showing up for them, smoky Augusts and all.

Do your part while you’re there. Honor every fire restriction, drown your campfire when they’re allowed at all, and never fly a drone near a fire, since one drone grounds every aircraft on the incident.

The Bottom Line

Don’t let fire season scare you off a summer in the parks. Bookmark the wildfire tracker and the air quality map, check them on the schedule above, know your refund deadlines, and keep a plan B in your pocket. Do that, and the worst realistic outcome for most folks is a hazy sunset photo, which, we’ll admit, has saved more than one of our shoots.
