The Greens Creek silver mine already operates inside the monument, and in 2026 it advanced a surface exploration project fast-tracked through federal permitting, while Alaska regulators opened renewals of its waste-management and reclamation permits. Expanding an industrial mine inside a national monument raises long-term water quality risks in the Tongass rainforest.
