Designated a national park on June 28, 1980, Biscayne covers 173,000 acres just south of Miami, 95 percent of it underwater. The park preserves the northernmost living coral reefs in the continental United States, along with a chain of undeveloped barrier islands, mangrove shoreline, and Biscayne Bay.
