What’s happening to Pinnacles
Towering rock spires and talus caves shelter one of the last wild populations of California condors. The BLM has proposed opening more than a million acres of California public land to oil and gas drilling, including split-estate parcels where the federal government holds subsurface mineral rights directly adjacent to and beneath national and state parks. At Pinnacles, fracking operations could contaminate the aquifer that sustains the park’s ecosystem and drive condors from the cliffs they were brought back from extinction to occupy.
