The situation
What’s happening to Carrizo Plain
California’s Serengeti. The largest remaining chunk of San Joaquin Valley grassland, home to endangered kit foxes, pronghorn, and the largest concentration of painted rock art in the state. Oil drilling has surrounded it for decades. The monument itself is closed to new leasing, but the Bureau of Land Management is weighing new oil and gas leasing on the federal land around it.
