What’s happening to Cadiz Groundwater Pipeline
The eastern Mojave Desert holds ancient aquifers beneath the Fenner Valley that feed desert springs relied on by bighorn sheep and the desert tortoise. On July 10, 2026 the BLM issued a final 50-year right-of-way letting Cadiz Inc. convert an old natural gas pipeline into a water line, crossing about 53 miles of public land to move up to 25,000 acre-feet of desert groundwater a year to Southern California cities. Scientists warn the pumping would draw down aquifers far faster than they recharge, drying up the springs that make life possible in this desert.
