About this tracker
A free public tool from More Than Just Parks, an independent, reader-funded public lands advocacy organization.
What this is
The Public Lands Wildfire Tracker answers one question every visitor actually arrives with: is the place I want to go on fire, or downwind of one, right now? Every other fire map organizes around incidents. This one organizes around the roughly 2,600 named national parks, forests, wilderness areas, monuments, and refuges you might actually visit.
Millions of people search for a specific park during fire season, then try to piece together whether a trip is still smart from a dozen agency pages. We built this so the answer is one screen, in plain language, for free.
Who makes it
More Than Just Parks is a public lands advocacy organization, founded by Jim and Will Pattiz. The brothers spent years in the field documenting America's public lands for the agencies that manage them, and turned to defending them when the places they knew started going up for lease and for sale.
We exist to protect America's public lands: the forests and deserts, canyons and coastlines that belong to every American in common. We do it with evidence: reporting from the ground on the threats to public lands and the people responsible, a public record anyone can check, and tools like this one that put a federal decision in front of the people who care about the place while there is still time to act.
The reporting is funded entirely by readers. We take no money from the industries we cover. Land managers and Capitol Hill staff read us alongside more than 27,000 subscribers to our free daily briefing.
Why it is free
Public lands belong to everyone, so a tool that helps you visit them safely should be free to everyone. This tracker will always be free to use, with no account required. If it helps you, the best way to support it is to read and share our journalism, sign up for the briefing, and tell a friend planning a trip.
How to reach us
Questions, corrections, a monitor or fire that looks wrong, or a press inquiry: email ask@morethanjustparks.com. We read everything and we fix what we get wrong.
This tool reports official government data for trip planning. It is general information, not a substitute for agency closures, evacuation orders, or emergency guidance. Always check the managing agency and local authorities before you travel. Conditions can change faster than any feed updates.
