Glacier Bay became a national park on December 2, 1980, protecting 3.3 million acres in Southeast Alaska representing one of the most dramatic examples of glacial retreat ever documented. When Captain George Vancouver sailed through in 1794, the bay was completely filled with ice; today, glaciers have retreated more than 65 miles.
