The situation
What’s happening to Allegheny
Pennsylvania’s only national forest hosts more than 12,000 oil and gas wells, more than any national forest in America, and the federal government just made it easier to drill more. New USDA rules finalized in January 2026 eliminate site-specific environmental review for oil and gas leases on public land. In a forest already scarred by a century of extraction and littered with hundreds of leaking abandoned wells, the streamlining is acceleration, not reform.
