The situation
The Alps of Nevada. Glacial cirques, alpine lakes, and mountain mahogany rising 11,000 feet above the Great Basin in Elko and White Pine Counties, ancestral lands of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone. In December 2024, the Forest Service proposed a 20-year ban on oil, gas, and geothermal development across 264,000 acres. Four months later the administration canceled it, reopening the range to extraction. Gold mining may be the more immediate danger, with the Bald Mountain Mine expanding on the southern flank and the price of gold at an all-time high.
