What’s happening to Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine
An active uranium mine on the Kaibab National Forest just south of Grand Canyon National Park, inside the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni monument landscape and above the aquifer that feeds Havasu Creek and the Havasupai Tribe’s only water source. The Havasupai have fought the mine for decades. In July 2026 Arizona regulators raised the permitted arsenic limit for the mine’s discharge over tribal objection, deepening fears that uranium mining will contaminate the deep aquifer beneath the Grand Canyon.
