The situation

What’s happening to Mt. Hood

A bill in Congress would hand 150 acres of Mt. Hood National Forest to the city of The Dalles so it can triple the capacity of Crow Creek Reservoir and feed Google’s data center campus, which consumed 40 percent of the city’s water supply in 2025. Google has five data centers in The Dalles with a sixth opening this year, and has received $260 million in tax breaks. HR 655 passed the House and is before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. A coalition of 14 environmental groups and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs have urged Oregon’s senators to oppose what they call a public land giveaway to subsidize private water consumption at industrial scale. Five ESA-listed salmon and steelhead runs depend on the Dog River watershed.
