What’s happening to Hermosa Critical Minerals Project
A $2.16 billion zinc, silver, and manganese mine in the Patagonia Mountains of the Coronado National Forest, about 30 miles southwest of Tucson near the Mexico border. On July 7, 2026 the Forest Service signed the final record of decision authorizing mine infrastructure on national forest land, including the primary access road, a dry-stack tailings facility, and a power line, with roughly 750 acres of surface disturbance in the biologically rich Sky Islands. The South32 project was fast-tracked under FAST-41 as a critical minerals priority, with final authorization set to issue September 4, 2026.
