The situation
What’s happening to Congaree
Four miles from the largest intact tract of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in North America, a nuclear fuel factory is leaking contamination into the groundwater. The Department of the Interior says the plume could reach Congaree National Park. Upstream, forever chemicals and plastic pellets flow into the same rivers that feed the swamp. The old trees have survived centuries of floods. What they cannot survive is what we put in the water.
