The situation
A nuclear power plant is leaking radioactive water into a national park, and the federal government just extended its license to 80 years. Turkey Point’s aging cooling canals have been contaminating Biscayne Bay with tritium and driving a hypersaline plume toward the drinking water supply of three million people. Under the most optimistic sea-level projections, the plant will be underwater by 2040, twelve years before its license expires.
