The work

What they do

Maintenance and advocacy for the 1,300-mile Florida Trail. Crosses national forests, national wildlife refuges, and other federal lands.

Every year they sign one sentence and file it with the federal government: “THE FLORIDA TRAIL ASSOCIATION (FTA) BUILDS, MAINTAINS, PROTECTS, AND PROMOTES THE FLORIDA NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL (FLORIDA TRAIL), AND A NETWORK OF HIKING TRAILS THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF FLORIDA. THE ASSOCIATION PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PUBLIC TO PARTICIPATE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, ENGAGE WITH IN OUTDOOR RECREATION AND CONTRIBUTE TO MEANINGFUL VOLUNTEER WORK.”

Honesty note: leadership comes from each year’s federal filing, so it can run a year behind. This one caught a changing of the guard in the act: the FY2025 officer table lists Tisha Mccombs, the return itself is signed by Sean Amidon. Orgs that claim their page can update it same-day. Those 525 volunteers are people who decided this ground was theirs to defend. If FTA is fighting for your place too, the matchmaker will find your way in.
