New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest is caught in a policy vise. The USDA declared an emergency on most of the forest, clearing the way for expedited logging without public comment. Then the administration fired the staff who maintain the trails, conduct fire research, and respond to emergencies. Then came the driest summer on record. Fewer people, more cutting, record drought.
