The four national forests of East Texas, the Sam Houston, Angelina, Sabine, and Davy Crockett, are pockets of piney woods, bottomland hardwood, and endangered red-cockaded woodpecker habitat in a heavily developed region. The Forest Service is preparing an environmental impact statement to decide which of roughly 500,000 acres of federal minerals to open to future oil and gas leasing, amending the 1996 forest plan. A decision is expected in August 2026, and could commit these forests to decades of drilling.
