What’s happening to Stillwater Mine Expansion
The Stillwater Mine on the Custer Gallatin National Forest, at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains, is the only primary source of palladium and platinum in the United States. Sibanye-Stillwater has proposed Amendment 14 to its plan of operations, expanding surface disturbance for waste rock and tailings storage as the current facility nears capacity. The Forest Service and Montana DEQ are preparing an environmental impact statement, with a public comment period on the scope open through July 15, 2026. New tailings capacity in the Stillwater River valley raises long-term water quality and reclamation concerns beneath the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness.
