An open-pit lithium and boron mine in the Silver Peak Range of Esmeralda County, on public land tied to Cave Spring, a sacred site for the Western Shoshone and Timbisha Shoshone. In early 2026 a federal court upheld the BLM’s approval of Ioneer’s mine, clearing the way for construction. Tribes and conservation groups warn the mine will draw down groundwater that feeds the sacred spring, which reportedly went dry near monitoring wells, and imperil the endangered Tiehm’s buckwheat that grows nowhere else on Earth.
