What’s happening to Purple Sage Solar / Pahrump Valley
A 400-megawatt solar and battery project on about 4,300 acres of BLM land in the Pahrump Valley south of Pahrump. Though it generates clean power, the project would permanently clear roughly 860 acres of intact Mojave desert, require relocating desert tortoises, draw about 1,000 acre-feet of groundwater a year, and encroach on the Old Spanish National Historic Trail and the Amargosa Wild and Scenic River. It is part of a wave of utility-scale renewable projects testing how much desert habitat should be sacrificed for energy siting.
