The situation
What’s happening to Public Lands Rule Rescission
The 2024 Public Lands Rule, also called the Conservation and Landscape Health Rule, put conservation and restoration on equal footing with drilling, mining, and grazing across all 245 million acres of BLM land for the first time. In May 2026 the Interior Department finalized its rescission, despite 98 percent of public comments opposing the move. Stripping conservation from the BLM’s multiple-use mandate clears the way for extraction to dominate the largest body of public land in the country.
