Sacred to Native Hawaiians, home to monk seals, green sea turtles, and coral reefs untouched by human contact. Papahanaumokuakea stretches across the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as the most remote marine ecosystem on the planet. On June 11, 2026 a presidential proclamation reopened the world’s largest conservation area to commercial fishing, and Pacific conservation groups have vowed to challenge it in court.
