What’s happening to Mariana Trench & Rose Atoll Marine Monuments
Two of the most remote and pristine protected places under American jurisdiction: the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument near the Northern Mariana Islands and the Rose Atoll Marine National Monument near American Samoa. On June 11, 2026 a presidential proclamation reopened both to commercial fishing, the first extraction rollback of these Pacific monuments. The same proclamation reopened waters around Papahanaumokuakea. Earthjustice and Pacific conservation groups have vowed to sue, arguing the president cannot strip monument protections by proclamation.
