What’s happening to Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine NM
Underwater canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon and four extinct volcanoes rising from the Atlantic floor. Deep-sea corals thousands of years old live in these waters, the first marine monument in the Atlantic. The fishing industry wanted the protections gone, and in 2026 the administration delivered: a final rule reopened the monument to commercial fishing.
