What’s happening to Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR
A refuge stitched together from more than 100 tracts along the last wild stretches of the Rio Grande, home to ocelots, aplomado falcons, and one of the most biodiverse corners of the country. In June 2026 the Fish and Wildlife Service approved the Boca Chica Land Exchange, handing 715 acres of protected refuge land next to SpaceX’s Starbase to the company, including parts of the Palmito Ranch Battlefield National Historic Landmark. Conservation groups sued within days, arguing the trade sacrifices irreplaceable habitat and public land to private rocket operations.
