What’s happening to Lake Clark National Park & Preserve
Four million acres of active volcanoes, turquoise lakes, and salmon rivers on the west side of Cook Inlet, one of the wildest parks in the country. A private inholding called the Johnson Tract sits inside it, and the Park Service is analyzing two easements across park land, a transport corridor and a port on Tuxedni Channel, that would open the way for Contango Ore’s gold mine. Cutting industrial access routes through a national park to reach an inholding mine would fragment habitat and set a precedent for development inside protected Alaska parklands.
