The situation
Born from the Cold War’s most toxic legacy. Land around the Hanford nuclear site was off-limits for decades, accidentally preserving the last free-flowing stretch of the Columbia River and the healthiest remaining fall Chinook run. The monument now coexists with one of the most contaminated sites on Earth, and cleanup funding is the only thing keeping that paradox alive.
