What’s happening to 2026 Blowdown Emergency Logging

In June 2026 the Forest Service launched a region-wide “emergency salvage” logging effort across six Northern Rockies national forests, the Nez Perce-Clearwater, Idaho Panhandle, Lolo, Flathead, Bitterroot, and Kootenai, in response to December 2025 and spring 2026 windstorms. Invoking 2025 emergency authorities, the agency is skipping the pre-decisional objection process, expediting NEPA, and truncating Endangered Species Act consultation, with logging able to begin before an environmental assessment is finished. More than 5 million acres are flagged as “suitable for treatment,” and the public was given a single week to weigh in.
