Kobuk Valley was established on December 2, 1980, protecting a remote river valley 25 miles above the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska with no roads, no trails, and no visitor facilities. The park contains the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, 25 square miles of active sand dunes.
