Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

The national Motor Vehicle Use Map dataset holds no route records for this unit, so there is no mileage to report and nothing to map here.

What that does and does not mean

An absence of records in the national dataset is not a statement that this unit has no roads, and it is not a statement that motor vehicle use is prohibited. It means the Forest Service has not published MVUM route data for it in the national Enterprise Data Warehouse service we draw from. Some units manage motor vehicle access under other authorities, and some simply have not published to this dataset.

Check with the unit directly before planning any motorized trip. Do not read this page as permission or as a closure.

The rule behind these maps is being rewritten

On 24 August 2026 the Forest Service proposed reversing the rule that produces Motor Vehicle Use Maps: today a route is closed to vehicles unless a forest studied it and designated it, and the proposal would make routes open unless someone documents a reason to close them. It would also remove the national criteria that weigh damage to soil, water and wildlife before a route goes in. Public comment ran through docket FS-2026-0100 until 23 September 2026.

Three minutes, in your own words. The letter names this unit and says what the national record does and does not hold for it.

Method. Checked against the USDA Forest Service Enterprise Data Warehouse MVUM service, layers 1 and 2, harvested 21 August 2026. This unit returned no route records. Its boundary comes from the same source's administrative forest boundary layer, which is why it appears on the national map.
