Endangered Wildlife and Plants; Recovery Permit Applications
Fish and Wildlife ServiceFederal Register 2026-01250 ↗
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is inviting public comment on permit applications that would allow researchers and others to conduct activities involving endangered species that would otherwise be prohibited under the Endangered Species Act. These permits are specifically for scientific research and recovery efforts intended to help endangered species survive and recover. Conservation professionals, researchers, and anyone working with listed species should be aware of the comment opportunity.
In the agency’s own words
We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, invite the public to comment on the following applications for a permit to conduct scientific research to promote conservation or other activities intended to recover and enhance endangered species survival. With some exceptions, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) prohibits certain activities that may impact endangered species, unless a Federal permit allows such activity. The ESA also requires that we invite public comment before issuing these permits.
The reporting behind this
From More Than Just ParksA memo signed by Fish and Wildlife Service Director Brian Nesvik rewrites the heart of the Endangered Species Act without a vote, a rule, or a single public comment.
More logging. Fewer protections for big trees, roadless country and wildlife. Another sweeping change to America’s public lands is moving fast.
