EPA's Region 6 is proposing to modify an existing NPDES permit that governs pollution discharges from offshore oil and gas operations in the Gulf of America (formerly Gulf of Mexico) off Louisiana and Texas. The key change extends the deadline for operators to comply with toxicity limits on well treatment, completion, and workover fluids by three years, from May 2025 to May 2028. It also adds new discharge duration reporting requirements and renames the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America throughout the permit.

The Regional Administrator of Region 6 is seeking comments on a proposed narrow modification to the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) General Permit No. GMG290000 for existing and new sources and new dischargers in the Offshore Subcategory of the Oil and Gas Extraction Point Source Category, located in and discharging to the Outer Continental Shelf offshore of Louisiana and Texas.
