NMFS is proposing Amendment 25 (Revised) to the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan, which would update how Atlantic cod stocks are managed in U.S. waters based on the latest scientific stock assessments. It'd revise the number of cod stocks covered under the plan from the current structure to four distinct stocks and establish new management measures for each. This affects commercial and recreational fishermen in the northeastern U.S., as well as the broader marine ecosystem and fishing communities that depend on Atlantic cod.

NMFS announces that the New England Fishery Management Council (Council) has transmitted Amendment 25 (Revised) to the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan (FMP) to the Secretary of Commerce for review. If approved, Amendment 25 would revise the stocks of Atlantic cod managed in the FMP and include measures in the FMP necessary to manage four stocks of Atlantic cod in U.S. waters.
