The objective

What we are testing.

Willamette National ForestOld growth
“We are proposing to treat about 899 acres of plantations less than 80 years old using thinning, dominant tree release, gap creation, and skips.”

The agency wrote that in its own document, under Introduction. Nobody has been out to check it.

Walk into the marked thinning units in the Calapooia and Wiley Creek parts of the project and photograph the trees: trunk size, big old stumps, snags, and whether the canopy looks like an even-aged planting. Photos of large old trees, wide trunks or big snags mixed into a unit would undercut the claim that it is all young planted forest.

The paperwork

Everything else the document says about the ground.

2 more sentences, in the agency’s own words, with where each one sits in the document. Any of them is fair game for a photograph.

  • “there are no areas of known wolf activity or other evidence of wolf presence occurring in or near the project area.”
Under Endangered Species ActWhere: the Cala-Wiley project area, Sweet Home Ranger District (closest the document gets)
  • “There are no known populations of either species documented within or adjacent to the project area, nor is there habitat suitable to support them.”
Under Endangered Species ActWhere: the Cala-Wiley project area boundary
