Support Designation of Critical Habitat for 22 Species

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to designate critical habitat for 22 endangered and threatened species across Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands under the Endangered Species Act. The proposal would protect roughly 59,886 acres across nine islands, covering 9 animal species and 13 plant species. It'll affect federal land managers, military planners, and developers who operate on or near the designated areas, as activities requiring federal permits would need to undergo additional review to avoid harming the habitat.

We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), propose to designate critical habitat for 9 animal species and 13 plant species from the Mariana Islands (the U.S. Territory of Guam and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands) under the Endangered Species Act (Act). In total across both the Territory and Commonwealth, approximately 59,886 acres (24,235 hectares) on the islands of Aguiguan, Alamagan, Asunci[oacute]n, Guam (including the island of Cocos), Pagan, Rota, Saipan, Sarigan, and Tinian fall within the boundaries of the proposed critical habitat designation.
