Nothing is open on this one today. It is a place the Corps keeps an eye on, so we see the paperwork the day it lands.
Where river water spreads into the old-growth swamp, photograph the standing water and the flood debris line at the base of the big trees. Get color, foam, and any plastic pellets in the litter, with a hand or boot for scale.
Four miles from the largest intact tract of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in North America, a nuclear fuel factory is leaking contamination into the groundwater. The Department of the Interior says the plume could reach Congaree National Park. Upstream, forever chemicals and plastic pellets flow into the same rivers that feed the swamp. The old trees have survived centuries of floods.
Nobody is asking you to go here today. We watch this place so that the day a decision opens on it, the people who already know it hear the same week. If you are out here anyway, what you photograph now is worth more later than anything taken after the paperwork lands.
