Nothing is open on this one today. It is a place the Corps keeps an eye on, so we see the paperwork the day it lands.
In the Applegate Valley stands marked for the halted Late Mungers thinning, photograph the biggest standing trees with a pack or person for scale, plus snags and how closed the canopy is overhead. Show whether it looks like old forest or a planted row of same-age trees.
Late Successional Reserves are the backbone of the Northwest Forest Plan, set aside to protect older forest and to grow more of it for spotted owls and other old-growth-dependent species. Management inside a reserve is not forbidden. The plan allows thinning where it speeds a young stand toward old-growth structure, and dense single-species plantations often do benefit from it.
Nobody is asking you to go here today. We watch this place so that the day a decision opens on it, the people who already know it hear the same week. If you are out here anyway, what you photograph now is worth more later than anything taken after the paperwork lands.
More Than Just Parks doesn’t direct where you go or what you do. Terms.
