Nothing is open on this one today. It is a place the Corps keeps an eye on, so we see the paperwork the day it lands.
Out in the sagebrush steppe beyond the lava flows, in the lands added in 2000, photograph the ground itself: bunchgrass height, bare dirt between shrubs, cow trails and manure, and any fence with a grazed and ungrazed side.
So alien that NASA trained Apollo astronauts here. Over 750,000 acres of lava flows, cinder cones, and sagebrush steppe harbor species found nowhere else. Proposals to strip the expanded boundaries would hand this otherworldly landscape back to cattle and off-road vehicles.
Nobody is asking you to go here today. We watch this place so that the day a decision opens on it, the people who already know it hear the same week. If you are out here anyway, what you photograph now is worth more later than anything taken after the paperwork lands.
More Than Just Parks doesn’t direct where you go or what you do. Terms.
