The objective

2 places to check.

Cumberland Island National SeashoreOld growth
“the NPS would acquire approximately 10 acres of unimproved maritime forest”

The agency wrote that in its own document, under EXCHANGE 1, Parcel Overview. Nobody has been out to check it.

Walk Old River Trail on the marsh side and photograph the woods between the trail and the salt marsh: tree sizes, canopy, and any houses, driveways, clearings or debris in them. Photos showing either untouched forest to the marsh edge, or buildings, cleared ground or roads inside that same strip of woods.

The agency has published no document here with a sentence a photograph could settle, only a notice. The line below is read from that notice.

On Cumberland Island, walk the old roads and photograph the human traces still standing: house foundations, chimneys, fence lines, graveyards and headstones, planted yard trees. Date every shot; your location goes into the sealed record, never the public page.

The paperwork

Everything else the document says about the ground.

3 more sentences, in the agency’s own words, with where each one sits in the document. Any of them is fair game for a photograph.

  • “the NPS would remove an existing but defunct dock associated with exchange 2b”
Under EXCHANGE 2, Parcel OverviewWhere: exchange 2b parcel
  • “Most of the recovered ceramics were too small and/or eroded to identify by type”
Under ARCHEOLOGICAL RESOURCES, Affected EnvironmentWhere: exchange 1a and 1b parcels
  • “The third consists of cabins for enslaved people associated with Stafford Plantation (Site 9CM104)”
Under Table 8. Archeological Sites Within the Project AreaWhere: exchange 1b and 2b privately owned parcels
